　　Since the new ACT Writing Test has been in effect (September 2015), the method for grading has been confusing and unclear to many people. The score was initially shifted to the 1-36 scale as seen below.

　　This method of scoring was extremely confusing to many people because a 30 on writing is much harder to achieve than, say, a 30 on one of the core test subjects. But, as of June 28, 2016, ACT announced the scoring is being changed back to a 2-12 scale starting on the September 2016 test. In addition, the score report has been completely redesigned. On the next page, I have highlighted the most important elements for ACT Writing on the new score report. Then I show a close up of each relevant part of the score report for a student’s writing score.

　　Looking at this example, we see the student has scored an 8 on his ACT Writing. This happens to be a very good score for a Chinese test taker (especially because he is being compared to native English-speaking test takers). But, the problem is that many students aren't able to find how their score is calculated when searching through the website. Though it is listed on the score report itself, it's not easy to find on the website, so I will discuss this in a little more detail below.

　　The Problem: Searching the Website

　　The website is NOT easy to use and doesn't contain the full process of evaluation in any one specific place on the website. The first thing students find is the scoring guidelines from the official website: http://www.actstudent.org/writing/scores/guidelines.html

　　This is essential to understanding the fundamental 4 domains of the new test:

　　But, this doesn't give details of scoring. So, in order to understand this more clearly, students then click on the following link to see the full Scoring Rubric:

　　While the rubric above is useful for understanding what one needs to do to improve, it is still unclear how this leads to a score out of 1-36! Reading more on the website reveals more details about the breakdown of the scoring.

ACT写作分数详细解密　　Okay, so now we see that they are scored out of 12! Not 6!? This is even more confusing for students!!! Through further digging, a student may come across a concordance document which gives more detail: http://www.act.org/aap/pdf/ACTWritingConcordance.pdf.

　　However, the answer is still NOT crystal clear.

　　A Sample Grading

　　The three steps below outline the process judges use to score an ACT Writing essay.

　　STEP 1 – Domain Scores Given

　　Firstly, two different judges provide domain scores in the four domain areas.

　　STEP 2 – Overall Score is Calculated

　　Then, the two different judges'scores are combined to calculate a student's raw score.

　　The sum of the total scores are then added to achieve a 39 raw score. This score is divided by 4, resulting in a final score of 9.75, which is then rounded up to a 10. Therefore, the student would be given a 10 score for writing.

　　Comparison to Old Scoring System

　　For students that have already taken the ACT Writing Test under the old scoring system (1-36) and are wondering how their score equates to the 2-12 score system, the table below shows the concordance of scores. Schools will use this table as well as percentiles to determine entry requirements for students.

　　Conclusion

　　While its nice to understand how the test is scored, its more important to focus on improving your writing skills rather than obsessing about point score totals or how the test is scored in different situations or regions. This guide is meant to help students understand the basic components of scoring, but is not essential to understand to get a good score!
